Movin’ on up: By Robert James

by Harry Sheff

Editors, bloggers and fashion-insiders found shelter from the torrential rain storm in NYC Wednesday night at the By Robert James store opening party. Guests celebrated the menswear designer’s big move into a gorgeous 3,500 sq. ft., three-floor shop on Orchard Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side (moving across the street from the original 200 sq. ft. shop).

Newlyweds Robert James and his wife Michelle

The F.I.T alum launched his brand in 2008 as a full lifestyle collection centered on his appreciation for quality goods and authentic craftsmanship. The collection is classically sartorial with a rock and roll edge. Dress shirts retail from $108 to $168, sport shirts for $168, tailored vests are $165, blazers are $488, denim ranges from $175 to $228, trousers are $175 and T-shirts are $48. The second floor is equipped with an in-house tailor and custom fitting area where customers meet with James for one-on-one appointments. James stocks vintage boots, eyewear and accessories and has plans to showcase local artists’ work and host live concerts and DJ sets.
