ARE TODAY’S FASHION TRENDS COMING MORE FROM THE STREET OR FROM EUROPEAN RUNWAYS?

by Steve Pruitt

Q: Where are the latest fashion trends coming from? Are we seeing more urban and street trends driving current fashion as opposed to European fashion?

Steve Pruitt: That’s a big question, but I will give it a shot. Fashion trends generally start from the street. This could be Los Angeles, New York, Paris, or Tokyo. Usually these trends start as fads, then as they catch on, designers pick up the looks and develop them.

The latest big trends have been streetwear looks. These looks started in NYC and LA, particularly in the skate community. Supreme was one of the first brands that popped, along with e-commerce sites like Karmaloop.

Today this trend can be seen in designs from Louis Vuitton to Cucinelli. Important pieces for this trend are hoodies, draw string pants, tee’s and outerwear. Streetwear insiders have even been given creative positions in many of the top-end design companies (like Virgil Abloh from Off-White joining Louis Vuitton). So, even though this trend originated on the streets, you see them move into the luxury category in Europe.

That said, the streetwear trend is absolutely mature. So, what is the next one? Go to LA, NYC and London, to see what people wearing. Keep an open mind because these fads can often be very obscure and may not make a lot of sense to begin with.

The good news is that there will always be new fads and some of them will turn into trends. Keep your eyes open and close to the ground if you want to catch them before they mature.
